![]() The System Shock remake was originally supposed to be released in 2017. Work on the remake was announced in November 2015, the official Kickstarter campaign started in 2016, including a first demo, at that time still based on the Unity engine, after a month the original Kickstarter goal was achieved. The influences of the almost 30-year-old classic can still be seen in many games today, but especially in titles like Dishonored – or of course Bioshock. On top of that, System Shock was one of the first games that, in addition to playful freedom and a large number of possible solutions, placed a special focus on the narrative density of the environments and made audio logs in games popular, for example. If you can flush the toilet in your favorite game today, stop for a moment and thank System Shock. On top of that, in both Ultima Underworld and System Shock, the player can interact with the game environment much more extensively than in Doom. Hard to believe when you watch the trailer above these lines, right? Both titles were able, for example, to display not only a steplessly smooth first-person perspective, including textured walls and – in contrast to Wolfenstein 3D, which appeared in 1992 – even ceilings and floors clad with pixel wallpaper, even slopes. Even Doom, which was released at the end of 1993 and then really sparked the 3D ego trend, was technically less advanced than System Shock or even Ultima Underworld The Stygian Abyss in some respects. ![]() When System Shock was released in 1994, it was also one of the technical pioneers.
